Greenway, Open Space and Rural Recreation Plan

Greenway, Open Space and Rural Recreation Plan

Mifflin and Juniata Counties collaboratively developed the Juniata-Mifflin Counties Greenway, Open Space and Rural Recreation Plan, which is a planning document that explores the status of parks, recreation, greenways, trails, and open space and recommends strategies and actions to enhance these assets for current and future generations.

Mifflin and Juniata Counties worked together to create a vision that was built upon the unique characteristics of both Counties while setting strategic direction to enhance the quality of life for citizens through the conservation of  open space and provisions of parks and recreation opportunities. The plan defines recommendations for providing recreation facilities, parks, greenways and trails; preserving open space and farmland; and protecting important natural resources. The Plan is not a law. It is an advisory document that will serve as a long-range planning tool for the two Counties and guide future plans and decisions. This project was financed primarily by a Community Conservation Partnerships Program (C2P2) grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' (DCNR) Bureau of Recreation and Conservation. Juniata County received the grant from DCNR. Mifflin County provided a match toward the project, and the Planning and Development Department administered the grant for Juniata County. Work began on the project in 2007 and continued throughout 2008 and 2009. Mifflin County adopted the plan in February 2010, and Juniata County adopted the plan in March 2010.
