Duties of the Prothonotary/Clerk of Courts

The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Legislature, and the Administrative Office of the Pennsylvania Courts have established the rules that must be followed in this office:

The word Prothonotary is a Latin and Greek term meaning First Scribe. William Penn appointed the first Prothonotary in Pennsylvania in 1683.

Prothonotary/Clerk of Courts are the keepers of all Civil and Criminal Cases filed, with the Court of Common Pleas.

Prothonotary is responsible for filing and docketing civil filings….Divorce, Custody, Complaints, Writs, Mortgage Foreclosures, Judgments, PFA’s (filed by Mifflin County Abuse Network).  Prothonotary also collects costs on civil orders imposed by Court of Common Pleas…..there are many other aspects of the office.

Clerk of Courts is responsible for filing and docketing criminal transcripts received from Magisterial District Judge’s Offices. Clerk of Courts attends Court; inputs information on each criminal case that is before Court of Common Pleas. Collects imposed costs of prosecution, fines, and restitution, by Court of Common Pleas….there are many other aspects of the office.

Prothonotary/Clerk of Courts assists in jury selection during the criminal and civil terms.
